The Kardashev scale is a method of measuring a civilizational level of technological advancement based on the amount of energy it can use. This hypothetical scale takes into account energy consumption at a cosmic level. This method was proposed by Nikolai Kardashev in 1964. He explained three types of civilizations-Type 1, 2, and 3.
This hypothesis was reevaluated by Carl Sagan and Michio Kaku. Later on, many other levels were added to the initial 3 types proposed by Kardashev.
Type 0 or Alien/Baby civilization-- Uses natural resources found on their local planet to obtain energy, oil, natural gas, etc. It generates power for its propulsors by burning chemical fuel.
Type1 or Planetary civilization- Able to use all the energy available on its planet. This civilization sees the large-scale application of fusion power. Antimatter can convert the entire rest mass of the particles into radiant energy. Reusable energy by converting sunlight into energy. The main power source is nuclear energy. Uses nuclear fusion, not fission. Can send manned aircraft to any planet in its solar system. Cancer and chronic diseases can be eliminated. Regeneration of any organ is possible. Capable of living on land, in the sea, and clouds.
Type 2 or Stellar civilization- Can consume the energy of its star. This can be achieved by a Dyson sphere/rings/swarm/bubble/shell/net or Bubbleworld or Matrioshka brain/Shkadov thrusters(stellar engine), or Niven ring. Dyson's construction surrounds the stars and captures their energy. Methods used by type 2 civilization-- All methods of type 1 civilization, Dyson constructs, Feeding stellar mass into a black hole, Star lifting, Antimatter recycling, and Stellar engines to move the stars. Can regenerate at the genetic level.
Type 3 or Galactic civilization- Can use the energy of all galaxy. Type 3 methods-- All techniques of type 2, Tapping into the energy released from supermassive black holes, White holes, capturing the energy of Gamma-ray bursts, and Emissions from quasars. Uses antigravity devices. Can use existing wormholes to travel throughout the galaxy. The maximum life span for that particular species.
Type 4 or Universal civilization- Controls or uses the entire universe, and can harness dark energy. Can create artificial wormholes. The main energy source is a supernova. Travels through multiple galaxies. Can extract consciousness from flesh and achieve immortality. Can create intelligent life e.g. type 0 civilization.
Type 5 or Multiversal civilization- Controls collections of universes. Uses white holes, in their universe, for energy and to open the door of other universes. A white hole is an astronomical body that releases massive energy. One white hole can release energy equivalent to roughly 14 million times that of the entire galaxy. Inhabitants are masters of three-dimensional worlds. Teleportation is possible. Invulnerable to destruction by forces of nature. Able to download identities into a robot body anywhere in the universe, use it for some time and then upload the identity back in the clouds. Avatars are type 5.
Type 6 or Multidimensional civilization-- There are no physical bodies. These civilizations exist in the form of pure consciousness. They gather energy from white holes in various universes to enter higher dimensions. Can travel backward and forward through time. They can overcome cause and effect and truly become omniscient and omnipotent.
Type 7 or Creator civilization- Type 6 civilizations will come to a realization that a creator civilization exists, however, will not be able to develop into a type 7 civilization, no matter how hard they try. Type 7 is not a civilization but existence itself. The creator of all matter, energy, natural laws, space, time, and dimensions exists at this level.
Earth is still at less than type 1 civilization. It may take more than 100 years to reach the type 2 level and Roughly 100,000 to a million years to reach type 3.
John Barrow proposed a reverse classification from type 1 minus to type omega minus. Microdimentional mastery.
Type 1 minus- can manipulate objects e.g. building structures, mining, etc.
Type 2 minus- Can manipulate genes, alter the development of living beings, transplant parts of themselves, and engineer genetic code.
Type 3 minus- Can manipulate molecules and molecular bonds and create new materials.
Type 4 minus- Can manipulate individual atoms, create nanotechnologies on the atomic scale, and create complex artificial lives.
Type 5 minus- Can manipulate atomic nuclei and engineer the nucleons that compose it.
Type 6 minus- Can manipulate quarks and leptons. Similar to Gods.
Type omega minus- Can manipulate the basic structure of space and time.
Currently, we are in between type 3 and 4 minus.
Per the Barrow Scale, advanced civilizations would not focus on claiming more space and resources but would optimize the space they already occupy. Rather than exploring the galaxy and beyond, they would choose to remain within their solar system and harness the power of their sun. One scenario includes the possibility that they will convert all the matter in their system into computronium and arrange it in layers around the star – creating a megastructure known as a “Matrioshka Brain.”
Robert Zubrin divided civilizations based on their range in space-
Type 1- Spread across its planet.
Type 2- Has extensive colonies in its stellar system.
Type 3- Has colonized its galaxy.
Carl Sagan divided civilizations based on the accessibility of bits of information. The division is from A to Z. We are currently at level H.
Questions--
-
Will transition from type 0 to 1 lead to self-destruction because of increasing temperatures? Many species may not be able to survive.
It may happen theoretically or may not because of the development of new engineering and technology. Mind uploading and artificial intelligence may lead to a digitalized civilization. Advanced civilizations will be so energy efficient that they will produce very low waste heat emission products. -
Why can't we see or encounter a higher level of civilization?
- Because its activities would be indistinguishable from the workings of nature.
- Maybe we are not looking in the right places
- Not looking for the right things
- Have not been looking long enough
- None have emerged yet
- Civilizations would percolate outwards rather than colonize consistently.
- The settlement of the galaxy would occur in clusters because not all potentially- habitable planets would be hospitable to humans or other alien life forms.
- Great silence persists in communicating with extraterrestrial life for the fear of elimination by the advanced types. They may eliminate us for the fear of competition, xenophobia, etc.
- Dark Forest theory
- Earth in a prison theory
- Advanced civilizations may not have a body. They may exist as pure consciousness and therefore not visible to human eyes.

Why can’t we find any advanced alien civilizations out there?
Keith Cooper, a freelance science journalist, recently speculated on this topic over at Centaury Dreams. He proposed three possible explanations for why civilizations might fall off the Kardashev scale at some point, seemingly never reaching a type III level.
a. They fail to colonize the stars
A strong argument in favor of this explanation is Geoffrey Landis’ percolation theory.
Landis assumes that interstellar travel is short distance only, as travel to far destinations would require hundreds of years and thus be unfeasible. So an interstellar civilization will expand gradually, in bursts, colonizing the neighboring systems one by one.
Not all of these systems will be colonizable (or warrant the effort), and thus some will become dead ends. Similarly, some systems will be so far away from their next neighbors, that they too will become dead ends. Thus, an expanding interstellar civilization will grow outward like the roots (or branches) of a tree, until all its ramifications will meet dead ends and expansion will stop. No type III.
b. Their energy requirements are low
Another theory is that civilizations, as they evolve and become more efficient, will have lower energy demands, not higher. Such civilizations are driven by optimization and specialization, not expansion and consumption. An optimized society will also not increase in numbers significantly, and thus not need to colonize new worlds to sustain its growth.
Such a civilization will very likely travel to other systems, but to explore and gain knowledge, not to seize and consume. They might very well be galactic, and even intergalactic, but they wouldn’t occupy a place on the Kardashev scale.
c. Black holes are more interesting
This is the most beautiful theory of all.
If we assume that an evolving civilization will become more efficient and also require more energy, what’s the likeliest target of their interest? Black holes. Infinite energy, condensed into the tiniest possible space. There’s a good reason why all scientists get giddy when one mentions black holes: Black holes are fascinating and terrifying at the same time.
The fascination with black holes as an alternative focus to expansion goes well beyond their energy potential. Black holes could make the most powerful computers imaginable. They could also be gateways to other universes or existential dimensions, where super-advanced civilizations go to be among their peers, leaving us barbaric beasts behind to crawl across normal space-time at our glacial tempo.
The Transcension Hypothesis speculates on exactly this alternative: that sufficiently advanced civilizations may invariably leave our universe.
The evolution of life on Earth points toward specialization and ever-decreasing scales of manipulative dexterity. Extrapolating that to alien civilizations, we’d invariably conclude that they’d much more likely develop toward the micro-, nano-, and subatomic scale, and head inward, into the infinite density and energy of black holes, as opposed to dedicating themselves to greater and larger constructions, hugely growing energy demands and unsustainable scales.
Evolutionary development guides intelligent life increasingly into inner space and what is referred to as STEM, small scales of space, time, energy, and matter. ~Owen Nicholas, The Transcension Hypothesis. -
Can Meditation ( Dharna, Dhyan, Samadhi ) directly take us to type 6 or 7?
Yes, this is what Sanatan Dharma/Yog says.
Yatha pinde tatha brahmande-- Whatever is inside us is in the existence or whatever is in the existence is inside us. It means all higher levels are inside us, we do not need to explore outside space.
In the Chakra system energy moves up and up until it comes out of Shahastradhara Chakra and becomes a part of Parmatma. So, in Sanatan Dharm, there is a way to become type 7.
When atma/consciousness leaves the body, doesn't it go to higher levels?
In Sanatan Dharm we hear about higher levels of civilizations. Following are some examples-- Flying chariots and mandirs
- Narad's teleporting
- Mouse, peacocks, etc. as vehicles of transportation
- Advanced weapons
- Avatars
- Immortals (Type 4) or Chiranjeevis
- Amrit/Soma an immortality elixir
- Statement that only atma/consciousness survives
- Time travel ( King Kakudami and his daughter Revati). Urvasi coming from swarglok to Bhulok, every year, to meet king Pururva. NArad muni was a frequent traveler between different loks.
- In Hinduism time is cyclical but it also keeps moving forward- Kalachakra
Sanatan Dharm has the concept of Loks. There are fourteen loks, Six above the earth and seven below. These may be different levels of civilizations.
Level of divinities are five
-
Para- it is experiential. not describable.
-
Vyuah--4 stages, Sankhya
-
Vibhava- Avatar. Ava is down. Tar is to descend.
-
Antaryami- Present everywhere
-
Archa- Murty

Why higher civilizations will create lower civilizations that are full of pain and suffering? Their goal should be to move up.
-
Why do civilizations have to move higher and higher? Is it curiosity? A desire to become the creator? To meet the creator? or they are just power hungry?
-
Is it only the energy that matters or there is a role for efficiency and optimization?
-
Why Infrared telescopes and Quasars as particle accelerators have not seen any type 2 or higher civilizations yet?
Topics to explore-- Fermi paradox, Grandfather killing paradox, Aurora effect.
