How to say No to gift demands

It is a common scenario that when a U.S.A. resident is planning to travel to his home country, the relatives, friends, neighbors, etc. ask for electronic or other expensive items. It becomes a weird situation, and many do not know how to handle that demand. Following are some ways to respond:

  1. Say yes if you think that it is an appropriate demand and you can fulfill it.
  2. Tell them that you can take only a certain amount of items as per customs rules, and you already have those items for others.
  3. Tell them that your baggage is full and there is no more space.
  4. Ask them to order it online and deliver it to your place.
  5. Ask them to pay you before you buy the items.
  6. Clarify the custom duty. The actual amount with the customs duty may be very high.
  7. Tell them that if for any reason the item malfunctions, it may not be eligible for a refund if it is outside the return window.
  8. Tell them that it is outside your budget.
  9. Tell them that something went wrong with the order, and you could not get it on time
  10. Simply do not respond.
