Lockup

As per M-W, Lockup means --jail, prison, a place where prisoners are kept, or act of locking.

People with mental diseases may also get locked up to prevent harm to others.

In the financial world, there is a term called lockup agreement. It means the tactic of arranging with a friendly party an option to buy a valuable portion of one's corporate assets in order to discourage a takeover by another party.

Lockup is also used to indicate keeping things safe or in a safe place e.g. lock up your car and lock up your belongings in the locker.

During lock up, usually, the locked-up person gets free food, shelter, medical care, etc. from the authority that is locking him up. He has no choice to make decisions. Everything is decided for him. He loses his autonomy almost completely.

Lock up may be bailable.

Uses:

  1. Government officials are discussing the release of inmates from lockup.
  2. It is in your interest to lockup the deal asap.
  3. He was locked up for his actions
  4. Hurry up. Lock up your belongings and run.

Lockdown

As per M-W, lockdown means

  1. An emergency measure or condition in which people are temporarily prevented from entering or leaving a restricted area or building (such as a school) during a threat or danger

  2. A temporary condition imposed by governmental authorities (as during the outbreak of an epidemic disease) in which people are required to stay in their homes and refrain from or limit activities outside the home involving public contact (such as dining out or attending large gatherings)

  3. The confinement of prisoners to their cells for a temporary period as a security measure

Uses:

  1. The whole country is under lockdown
  2. Principle locked down the school building
  3. The school building was locked down by principle when a person with a gun entered the building.
  4. Prime Minister issued a lockdown order for the entire nation.

    Lockdown is imposed by an authority. People take shelter wherever they are, usually in a building or their home and are not supposed to go out. People who are under lockdown are not criminals. They are in this state for someone's else crime, act, or in cases of communicable disease pandemics/ epidemics/endemics, or in conditions where due to physical disease person cannot go out and is essentially locked down in his own house.

When the lockdown is for a dangerous situation, then people are supposed to hide, not to move, and make noise. They are almost still or like a statue.

In cases of pandemics/endemics, people do not have full autonomy but are free to do whatever they want inside their house. There is usually no or minimal danger to their safety or life, inside their house. People are responsible for their food, supplies, medical care, etc.

Prisoners are locked up but in some situations, they may further be locked down in their cells.

Lockdown is not bailable.

Lockout

As per M-W, Lockout means- the withholding of employment by an employer and the whole or partial closing of the business establishment in order to gain concessions from or resist demands of employees.

Lockout is when you forget to take your key and now cannot enter your building.

Lock-in

As per Dictionary.com Lock-in means

  1. An act or instance of becoming unalterable, unmovable, or rigid.
  2. Commitment, binding, or restriction.

Lock-in is also used to describe school or college parties where all the children are inside, and doors are locked except for emergency exits.

Therefore, in lockup, lockdown, and lock-in people are inside the buildings but in the lockout people are outside the building. Locked up people may be criminals, locked down people are usually victims.
