Summary:
On December 3rd, Kamala Harris (a democrat )dropped out of the presidential race, ending a campaign that struggled financially. Kamala spoke about her financial situation, how she isn’t a billionaire. In the democratic debate she made a huge stand by attacking Joe Biden on issues like busing and school segregation. Her poll numbers doubled and she had 13% of the national vote according to polls. Over the summer her fundraising began slowly disappearing and was soon behind all the other candidates.
Kamala’s poll numbers went down and never recovered. The article shows many tweets of competitors stances on her dropping out.
Connection:
While there isn't an image in this article, there is a video about the reasons of why Kamala Harris dropped out. Firstly it says that she wasn’t appealing to that many black voters as other candidates like Biden, and it adds on about her money situation.
The video helps readers understand in a different way of the issues in Harris’ election run. I think the publisher included it to inform the audience more about the subject. For the reader it adds an easily viewable summary of the article. While I can’t cite this video, it will be at the top of the url in the citation of the article.
Impact:
This article impacts the world as it tells everyone about an important dilemma in present day elections and how they are often based on money. People should pay attention to the elections and whats happening as its a direction reflection of our own system of democracy. Also knowing about who might become the president is always good.
I chose this article because I thought it was interesting that as Kamala drops out due to money problems, billionaire Bloomberg steps in.
Opinion:
My opinion on this topic is that democracy is crumbling. People who have genuine good ideas and money are no longer able to run or make a change and stand a chance at the oval office. I think that Kamala is calling out Michael Bloomberg by saying that not everyone is a billionaire. I think if this keeps happening America will turn into an Oligarchy and slowly people with no money will not be able to have a voice. This article made me think about things like this and where our country is headed, and it’s not a good place.
Questions:
Could there be any solution to the campaign expenditure problem that many candidates with good ideas and no financial backbone have?
Is America turning into an Oligarchy?
The article made me think of these questions. My thought process behind the questions was to think deeply about the election campaign system in America.
