The Story of Yugadi
There was a demon called Somakasura, who stole the Vedas from Lord Brahma and hid them in Sea. Lord Brahma asks help from Lord Vishnu for bringing back Vedas from Somakasura. Lord Vishnu takes “Machcha Avathara”, which is one of the 10 incarnations of Vishnu and kills the demon (Somakasura). Later, lord Vishnu returns Vedas to Brahma and he starts creating the world on Yugadi.
Yugadi means Yuga + Adi, which means beginning of year/ age. The significance of Yugadi stems from mythological times when Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe, began a series of wonderful creations, including that of the earth and all the life forms that live in it. According to a belief, on the day of Yugadi, Brahma also writes the fate of humans. One year is equal to one day of Brahma. Every year Lord Brahma starts his day and writes fate of people. Current Yugadi is called as “VILAMBI”.
According to the Indian History, the Yugadi is celebrated from the times of Mahabharata, on the “Chaitra Shuddha Padyami”. People from ages celebrate this day with great devotion. Many regions celebrate Yugadi with many names. Gudi Padawa in Maharashtra, Yugadi in Karnataka, Cheti Chand amongst the Sindhis.
Yugadi symbolizes that life is a beautiful combination of happy and sad events; that one has to experience every phase of life with equality and be a mixture of all the feelings. That’s the reason a mix-paste of all these are shared on the day of Yugadi ⤵
Happiness – Jaggery for its sweetness.
Sadness – Neem Bud/Flowers for its bitterness.
Anger – Green Chilli/Pepper for its hot taste.
Fear – Salt for saltiness
Surprise – Unripe Mango for its tang.
Disgust – Tamarind Juice for its sourness.
This Yugadi Pratipada Tithi Begins @ 18:41 on 17 Mar 2018 & Ends @ 18:31 on 18 Mar 2018.
